Gym to Crag

The most Pleasant Overhang.So, you’ve climbed in a climbing gym, but know you want and need more instruction.  Our Gym to Crag course is the perfect solution.  We often have students who arrive with amazing movement skills as well as competency in belaying and basic knot tying as the result of climbing indoors. What they need are many of the skills specific to climbing outside. Even climbers who have done a little top rope climbing outside still lack many of the skills covered in our Comprehensive Basic (CB). This course is an accelerated version of our CB that focuses on making the student familiar with techniques used in multi-pitch climbing and rappelling. Because students come to this course with top rope experience either indoors or out they are often able to learn and practice techniques beyond the realm of our CB.

Rope management at a hanging belayThis course is conducted entirely outdoors in a two or three day format. It is worth stating that the amount of information presented in our courses can be overwhelming. While we do offer the From Gym to Crag Course as two day course students usually walk away with a better working knowledge of the techniques when they take the three day version.

All necessary equipment is provided. If you have your own equipment and wish to use it, you can after your guide has determined its’ appropriateness and safe condition.

Climbing the classic 5.8 Ye Gods & Little FishesThis course covers in detail:

  • Basic knots (review)
  • Proper belay technique (review)
  • Environmental hazards and evaluation
  • How to build simple ground anchors
  • Removing artificial anchors while seconding a leader
  • Connecting yourself to a multi-pitch anchor
  • Breaking down an anchor
  • Movement in a multi-pitch environment
  • Safely rappelling

Detailed Course Itinerary:

We routinely customize courses based on our clients’ needs and wishes. If you don’t see a technique or skill that you would like to learn contact us, chances are we can make it happen.

Day 1

Our Gym to Crag course will review all of the information covered in our comprehensive basic, but at an accelerated rate. This ensures you have all the basic skills before we move on to more advanced material. We will cover (review) proper belay and rappel technique. Students are then introduced to hand placed anchors and how to remove them from the rock and properly rack them on the harness. The rest of the day will involve putting these new skills together in a multi pitch environment.

Day 2

The second day allows us to customize this course to the students and introduce new material as the students demonstrate competency with previously covered course material. Many groups climb to the South Peak of Seneca to experience a true technical summit while reinforcing old skills and learning new ones. Available topics include advanced rappel techniques, introduction to self rescue concepts and preparedness, as well as building top rope anchors

Day 3

Continuing practice of techniques with an instructor help students walk away from the course “owning” the skills they have been taught which ensures long term retention. Almost all students need this third day to really cement their new skills but if not our skilled and flexible instructors can seamlessly integrate skills from a higher level course.

This course is also offered in an abbreviated two day version. Please note; the enormous amount of information to be learned is best suited to a three day course.
